Twelve individuals have been arrested as part of a major investigation into a fatal crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough that claimed the lives of two police officers and five occupants of another vehicle. The arrests, made across the Teesside area, are linked to suspected serious criminal activity that preceded the tragic incident.

Cleveland Police confirmed that nine men and three women, aged between 19 and 61, were taken into custody on suspicion of various offenses. These include possession of firearms, criminal damage, drug supply, and involvement in an organised crime group. The investigation is focused on the events leading up to the collision, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday.

Authorities stated that the incident involved a Volkswagen Passat, which was being pursued by police, travelling the wrong way down the A66 before colliding head-on with an oncoming police car. Tragically, both officers in the police vehicle and all five occupants of the Passat died at the scene. The deceased officers have been identified as PC Tom Clough, 38, and PC Matthew Blades, 37.

The force detailed that prior to the crash, they received multiple reports of two vehicles being driven dangerously. One vehicle, a Volvo XC60, was reportedly involved in ramming properties in the Middlesbrough area, with the Passat believed to be associated with this activity. Both vehicles were found to be using cloned number plates but were identified by automated number plate recognition technology. The Volvo has since been recovered.

Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox described the investigation as fast-moving and complex, emphasizing the profound and lasting impact of the events on the local area. He stated that the force has a duty to thoroughly investigate the criminal activity that led to the fatal outcome and to ensure all responsible parties are brought to justice.

Among those arrested, four individuals had prior convictions. The arrested parties face a range of charges, with some remanded in custody, others released on conditional bail, and one individual already charged with drug supply offenses.
