A 14-year-old boy has been charged with preparing to commit acts of terrorism in connection with an alleged plot targeting mosques in south London. The Metropolitan Police announced the serious charge on Wednesday, stating the suspect's actions were linked to "extreme right-wing" ideology.

This arrest and charge highlight ongoing concerns about terrorism threats, particularly those motivated by far-right extremism, within the United Kingdom. The alleged plot underscores the vulnerability of religious sites and the communities they serve.

Authorities revealed the charge, "conduct in preparation for giving effect to an intention to conduct acts of terrorism," after initial investigations into criminal damage led to the discovery of incriminating documents. While police stated they do not believe there is a wider threat, they have contacted the targeted mosques in Sutton to offer support and advice.

"This is a very serious terrorism charge against a young boy and likely to be highly concerning to the public and the local community," said Helen Flanagan, head of counterterrorism policing in London. She added that efforts are underway to provide reassurance to the Muslim community.

The incident follows a series of alleged attacks and plots targeting Muslims in the UK. Earlier in the week, 12 individuals were arrested in Suffolk in relation to an "extreme right-wing" plot aimed at an Islamic gathering. Last month, a man was charged with attempted murder following a suspected anti-Muslim stabbing incident in Edinburgh.

Detective Chief Superintendent Nick Blackburn emphasized the importance of providing "reassurance and support" to the local Muslim community. He acknowledged the cumulative impact such incidents can have on community relations and security perceptions.

Police initially arrested the boy on July 9 for alleged criminal damage to a vehicle. Subsequent searches, however, uncovered materials that prompted the more severe terrorism-related charge. The suspect is scheduled to appear before a magistrates' court in London on Thursday.

The Metropolitan Police have assured affected mosques that they will continue to be kept updated and provided with necessary support. The investigation into the alleged plot and its connections to extremist ideologies is ongoing.
