A 41-year-old Salvadoran migrant died over the weekend following a medical emergency while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey, federal officials announced Monday.

Edwin Lopez-Cornejo had been detained at the facility since his arrest on June 18 in Plainfield, New Jersey. He was awaiting removal from the United States based on a reinstatement of a prior removal order, according to ICE.

ICE stated that Lopez-Cornejo was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead on Saturday. The agency confirmed that he received medical care while in custody and was seen by medical professionals. The official cause of death is currently pending an investigation. ICE also stated its commitment to ensuring safe and humane environments for those in its custody.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill expressed deep disturbance over the death, stating that the individual's loved ones deserve answers. Her administration is collaborating with the state's Congressional delegation to ascertain all facts surrounding the incident.

A Salvadoran migrant advocacy group reported speaking with a woman identifying herself as Lopez-Cornejo’s mother, Maria Cornejo. In a video shared by the group, Maria Cornejo stated her son managed seizures, diabetes, and high blood pressure with medication. She last spoke with him Friday, when he reported numbness in his right hand and face and was scheduled for further tests.

U.S. Representative Rob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, noted that Lopez-Cornejo had complained of difficulties on Saturday before collapsing at Delaney Hall. CPR was administered before he was taken to the hospital. Menendez indicated that ICE could not immediately provide answers to specific medical questions, which would need to be formally requested by his family.

Lopez-Cornejo had resided in the U.S. for 20 years, according to Representative Menendez. ICE confirmed his arrest on June 18 and that he was detained pending removal proceedings.

The circumstances surrounding Lopez-Cornejo's death are under review, with the official cause of death awaiting determination. This incident occurs amidst ongoing concerns about conditions within immigration detention facilities, as evidenced by past protests at Delaney Hall regarding detainee hunger strikes.
