A South Carolina judge has selected Sumter County as the new location for Alex Murdaugh's retrial on charges of murdering his wife and son. The decision moves the proceedings roughly 80 miles away from Colleton County, where the original trial took place.

Judge Debra McCaslin ruled last month that Murdaugh could not receive a fair and impartial trial in Colleton County, necessitating a change of venue. This ruling followed the South Carolina Supreme Court's decision earlier this year to overturn Murdaugh's previous convictions due to jury interference by the court clerk.

In her order issued Tuesday, Judge McCaslin stated that Sumter County is "best suited to accommodate the needs of this case," including ensuring Murdaugh receives a fair trial. The county was also cited for possessing the necessary security measures, courtroom facilities, technological capabilities, and supporting infrastructure for a safe and efficient proceeding.

The retrial is currently scheduled to begin on April 5, 2027. Murdaugh remains incarcerated, having pleaded guilty to separate financial crimes. He is serving 27 years on state charges and 40 years on federal charges for stealing from his clients.

Alex Murdaugh, a disgraced attorney, was convicted in 2023 for the June 2021 murders of his wife, Margaret "Maggie" Murdaugh, 52, and their younger son, Paul Murdaugh, 22. The two were found deceased from multiple gunshot wounds at the family's hunting estate. Murdaugh has consistently denied killing his wife and son.

The South Carolina Supreme Court's decision to overturn the convictions earlier this year centered on "shocking jury interference" by the Colleton County trial's court clerk, which compromised the integrity of the original verdict. This interference prompted the need for a new trial.

While the original trial was held in Colleton County, the determination for a change of venue was made without a specific new location being immediately identified. The subsequent order places the retrial in Sumter County, aiming to mitigate potential biases and ensure a controlled legal environment.

This development marks a significant procedural step in the legal saga surrounding the Murdaugh family, as the case prepares for a new trial with enhanced logistical and security considerations in a different judicial circuit.
