Labour's Bev Craig has been elected as the new mayor of Greater Manchester, succeeding Andy Burnham. The by-election was triggered after Burnham's election as Member of Parliament for Makerfield in June. Craig, who previously served as deputy mayor for economy, business and inclusive growth, secured victory after second-preference votes were counted.

Craig's election marks a significant moment for the region's leadership. She comes to the role with extensive experience, having led Manchester City Council since 2021. Her previous role within the Greater Manchester Combined Authority provided her with a deep understanding of the economic and business landscape of the city region.

In the final count, Craig defeated Reform UK's Sian Astley with a substantial margin, receiving 309,525 votes to Astley's 157,178. This outcome followed a first round where no candidate achieved an outright majority, with Craig securing 47% of the vote and Astley taking 21%. The second-preference votes were crucial in determining the final winner.

Looking ahead, Craig stated her primary objective will be to "make your life better" for the three million residents of Greater Manchester. She emphasized a commitment to defending the city region and fighting for improved living standards for all its inhabitants. Craig also highlighted the need to move beyond divisive politics and work collaboratively.

Craig acknowledged the challenges faced by many in the region, noting a diminished belief that hard work guarantees a better life. She asserted that everyone deserves quality housing and the ability to plan for their future and their children's futures. Her campaign focused on inclusive growth and ensuring that the benefits of the region's development are shared widely.

The by-election saw just under 25% of the more than two million eligible voters participate. Analysis of the first-round results indicated Craig led in all 10 local authority areas within Greater Manchester, underscoring her broad support across the region.

Congratulatory messages have begun to emerge, including one from Labour's deputy leader, Lucy Powell, MP for Manchester Central, who expressed her congratulations to the "fantastic new Mayor."

Craig's victory positions her to address key issues facing Greater Manchester, from economic development and housing to social mobility and regional infrastructure, aiming to build on the foundation laid by her predecessor.
