The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has received an initial shipment of over 16,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, marking a critical step in combating the nation's deadliest-ever Ebola outbreak. The 16,250 doses arrived in the capital, Kinshasa, late Friday evening, representing the first installment of a pledged 70,000 doses from the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners.

This influx of vaccines comes as the United Nations warns that Ebola infections in the DRC are spreading "exponentially." The current outbreak, though declared in mid-May, is believed to have begun weeks earlier and has already claimed over 2,500 lives from nearly 5,300 confirmed cases. Data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that transmission has not yet peaked and could potentially triple its current rate.

While Ervebo is approved against the Zaire strain of Ebola, the virus currently circulating in the DRC is the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Of the 70,000 doses allocated for the DRC, 20,000 will be used in a late-stage clinical trial to assess their efficacy against the Bundibugyo strain. The remaining doses are designated for front-line health workers and other essential personnel involved in the containment efforts.
