Europe must be prepared to face significant hardship this winter to sustain economic pressure on Russia, according to the UK's top national security adviser. Jonathan Powell, speaking at a conference in Kyiv, asserted that Europe's strategy of supporting Ukraine and implementing sanctions against Moscow is yielding results.

Powell described talk of Russian escalation not as a threat, but as an indicator of success, suggesting that pressure is finally impacting President Vladimir Putin. He emphasized that European nations should not ease their efforts, stating that "pressure on Putin was working and that means we have to keep the pressure up."

His remarks come at a critical juncture as Russia continues to target Ukrainian infrastructure and Europe grapples with a severe energy shortage. Despite these challenges, Powell expressed an optimistic outlook, suggesting that Ukraine has already achieved a form of victory by preventing a full Russian takeover and securing its right to self-determination.

"It will require some real hardship and difficulties on our parts," Powell acknowledged, "But we will have to swallow that and we have to keep the economic, military, political and diplomatic support going for Ukraine."

Ukraine's economy is facing substantial damage from ongoing Russian attacks, with the Minister of Economy, Oleksandr Kravchenko, estimating $10 billion in destroyed infrastructure this year. The blockade of Ukrainian sea ports is also significantly impacting grain exports, leading to an expected 1.5% contraction in the country's GDP.

Europe is navigating a global energy crisis with low gas stockpiles, complicating efforts to phase out Russian energy imports. While the EU aims for a complete cessation of Russian gas imports by January, recent reports indicate this plan is facing difficulties amidst broader energy shortages.

The Yalta European Strategy forum, where Powell delivered his remarks, was attended by Ukraine's leadership and international supporters.
