Former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Jeffrey Donaldson has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of child sex offenses, including one count of rape. The sentencing took place at Newry Crown Court.

Donaldson, 63, was convicted in June of the offenses, which spanned from 1985 to 2008. The prosecution detailed a pattern of abuse against two victims.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Paul Ramsey described Donaldson's crimes as a "catastrophic descent into disgrace." He imposed an 11-year sentence for offenses against Victim B and a consecutive four-year sentence for offenses against Victim A. Both sentences will run consecutively, totaling 15 years.

Due to the pre-2008 legislation, Donaldson will only serve half of his 15-year sentence in custody, meaning he could be released in late 2033, with the remainder served under supervision. He is also required to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Donaldson, who represented Lagan Valley as a Member of Parliament, has been held at Maghaberry Prison since his conviction. He is reportedly housed in the Moyola Unit, a section for prisoners with health care needs, and is believed to be there for his own safety.

Judge Ramsey highlighted aggravating factors, including the protracted nature of the offending and the youth of the victims. He noted that Donaldson's decision to contest the case, rather than pleading guilty, meant he would not receive a sentence reduction. "He has doubled-down in his denials," the judge stated, adding that there had been "not one word of regret, apology or shame."

Jeffrey Donaldson's wife, Eleanor Donaldson, faced a trial of the facts regarding mental health and was found by a jury to have committed acts related to five charges, including aiding and abetting her husband's offending. She has also applied to appeal her conviction.

Donaldson is seeking to appeal his convictions. His legal team has initiated the process to challenge the verdict, with the outcome of this appeal to determine the final length of his incarceration and subsequent supervision.
