A 19-year-old Illinois man has been charged in connection with an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting that may have targeted a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area, authorities announced.

Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine was arrested on Sunday, October 11, 2026, after the Palatine Police Department received information from the Mount Prospect Police Department regarding a potential mass shooting threat. This information originated from an individual who reported receiving concerning electronic communications from Paporakis.

Authorities stated that Paporakis had allegedly shared a document outlining a plan for a mass shooting, accompanied by images of a rifle, rifle magazines, body armor, and other tactical equipment. During a search of his home following his arrest, officers recovered a rifle, multiple loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition, tactical equipment, and a tactical vest displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism.

Investigators believe the largest Hindu temple near Aurora, Illinois, may have been the intended target of the thwarted plot. While the specific location has not been confirmed, detectives reviewed electronic communications and a document attributed to Paporakis titled, "Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter's Manifesto)." This document reportedly contained statements expressing white supremacist and extremist ideologies, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage.

The Aurora Police Department was alerted to the potential threat by the Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments. In response, Aurora police contacted Hindu places of worship in their jurisdiction to inform them of the developing situation.

Palatine Police Chief William Nord described the alleged threat as "serious" and credited the coordinated response by multiple police departments and the FBI for helping to identify and apprehend the suspect. He also acknowledged the individual who initially reported the concerning communications.

While Paporakis was taken into custody as he left his Palatine residence, the investigation into the precise intended target and the full scope of the alleged plot is ongoing. The recovered manifesto and electronic communications are central to the ongoing inquiry.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about religiously motivated extremism and domestic terrorism, with law enforcement agencies working to prevent such attacks through intelligence gathering and inter-agency cooperation.
