At least five people have died in Indiana following a week of severe storms and flooding that inundated parts of the Midwestern U.S. state. Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities continue to search for individuals stranded by the rising waters.

The state's governor, Mike Braun, had formally requested a presidential emergency declaration to secure additional resources for the disaster response. On Saturday, he announced that the federal government had committed to providing assistance, a move he expressed gratitude for.

"I spoke with President [Donald] Trump today about the severe storms and historic flooding impacting Indiana, and he informed me that he intends to approve our request for a Presidential Emergency Declaration," Braun stated on social media. He added, "I’m grateful to President Trump for his commitment to getting Hoosiers the federal assistance we need as we continue responding and recovering."

Emergency personnel have been utilizing boats to reach residents trapped in their homes by the floodwaters. The White River in Indianapolis, for instance, has overflowed its banks, contributing to dangerous conditions. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett described the current flooding as the worst the city has experienced in over three decades.

The National Weather Service reported that some areas received more than 280mm (11 inches) of rain within a two-day period. Among the reported fatalities, authorities in Delaware County found the body of a 58-year-old woman who is believed to have died while attempting to drive through flooded roads. A four-year-old child also perished when a tree fell on a home in Jennings County.

Law enforcement also recovered the body of a teenager who had been reported missing after reportedly jumping into a river. Governor Braun extended his condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing the seriousness of the ongoing flood situation and urging residents to stay clear of floodwaters.

Authorities are cautioning the public against attempting to drive through flooded areas, as vehicles can easily become immobilized. The widespread flooding has necessitated extensive rescue operations and is expected to cause significant damage across the affected regions of Indiana.
