Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has issued a stern warning to Ukraine, stating that a deadly attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea "cannot go unanswered." The incident, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the death of one sailor and injured several others, according to Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Araghchi, speaking in calls with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, described the attack as a violation of the United Nations Charter. He further accused Israel of provoking the strike in an attempt to "drag Europe into its war."

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Ukrainian attack caused the commercial vessel to "explode." In response to the incident, Iran summoned Ukraine’s charge d’affaires in Tehran to protest what it termed a "hostile and criminal act."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, stated on social media that Ukraine had achieved "very strong results" with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea. He specifically mentioned targeting "vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship." Ukraine has not directly confirmed responsibility for the strike on the Iranian vessel.

A senior Iranian lawmaker, Ebrahim Azizi, head of parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, also warned of retaliation. He posted on X, "Any attack on Iran always comes with a cost, and that remains true today; the U.S. and Israel are well aware of this." Azizi added that "Ukraine, too, may soon come to understand that Iran does not let actions go unanswered," calling the attack "miscalculated."

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has maintained that the country "has never intervened in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine," underscoring its neutral stance in the ongoing hostilities.

The incident marks a significant escalation, potentially drawing Iran into a direct confrontation with Ukraine over maritime actions in the Caspian Sea, a region previously less affected by the broader conflict.

Questions remain about the extent of Ukraine's involvement in the specific strike on the Iranian vessel and whether this incident will lead to a direct military response from Iran or further diplomatic tensions.
