McLaren driver Lando Norris captured his first Formula One victory of the 2026 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, ending an eight-month dry spell.

Norris, the defending champion, achieved the win at the Hungaroring circuit near Budapest with a strong performance aided by a measure of good fortune. This victory marks a significant moment for the British driver and his McLaren team.

The race saw Norris start from pole position but momentarily lose the lead to his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri early on. A subsequent collision involving Piastri and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr. created an opportunity for Norris to regain the advantage, which he capitalized on after a pit stop.

Following Piastri's retirement from the race due to a gearbox issue, Max Verstappen of Red Bull secured second place, with teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli finishing third. Antonelli, despite the result, extended his lead in the drivers' standings.

Norris's last Grand Prix win prior to this event was in Sao Paulo in November, although he did win a sprint race in Miami in May. The Hungarian Grand Prix served as the final race before Formula One's mid-season break, with the next event scheduled for the Dutch Grand Prix on August 23.

Further down the field, title contender Lewis Hamilton finished fifth after incurring a penalty for speeding in the pit lane, while George Russell took seventh place following an issue at the start of the race. The incidents and penalties shaped the final order behind the leading trio.

This win is a welcome boost for McLaren and Norris, who have been seeking a return to the top step of the podium. The team's performance at the Hungaroring suggests they are contenders as the season progresses towards its latter half.
