A man has been arrested and will be charged with homicide in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black woman whose body was found hanging from a tree in Jackson, Mississippi, last month, police announced Friday.

Fortune, a mother of four, was discovered dead in a hanging position on a tree behind a vacant home on August 3. Her death has now been officially classified as a homicide by the medical examiner's office, a determination made on Thursday, one month after her autopsy was completed.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney stated during a press briefing on Friday that the classification of homicide prompted investigators to act swiftly. Police executed two search warrants and secured an arrest warrant for the suspect, who was taken into custody Friday afternoon. The suspect has an unspecified association with Fortune.

While the suspect's arrest marks a significant development, police emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are anticipated. "This case remains active, and additional arrests will be pending as our investigators continue to follow the evidence wherever it leads," Chief Brackney said.

Fortune's body was found in various stages of decomposition. The exact cause or manner of death, beyond the hanging position, has not been publicly disclosed by authorities. Chief Brackney acknowledged the sensitivity surrounding the case, particularly given Mississippi's history. "We understand this case is being viewed through a broader lens, a global lens, and we do not dismiss those concerns. We are taking them seriously," she stated, while also stressing the importance of adhering to evidence and facts.

The mother of the deceased, Christy Spivey, has previously expressed her family's devastation and disbelief, stating, "She did not do this to herself." The family has been seeking answers since Fortune's body was discovered.

Authorities have declined to provide further details regarding the suspect or the nature of their association with Fortune, citing the active status of the investigation. The police chief reiterated the department's commitment to a thorough investigation.
