One of the three attendees shot during an assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died. James Copenhaver, 76, of Moon Township, passed away Wednesday, surrounded by his family, according to a statement from his family's attorney.

Copenhaver was one of three rally-goers struck by gunfire on July 13, 2024, when a gunman opened fire. He had been gravely wounded in the incident, his family's attorney, Joseph Feldman, stated. The family expressed gratitude for the "outpouring of love, prayers, and support" they received over the past two years.

According to Feldman, Copenhaver faced his challenges with strength and resolve. He is remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a veteran whose dedication to the country was a defining characteristic. Copenhaver died at a Pittsburgh hospital, and the cause and manner of his death are pending, the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner told ABC News.

Donald Trump remembered Copenhaver as a "true American Patriot" in a social media statement Thursday, calling his death a "tremendous loss." House Republicans also issued a statement acknowledging Copenhaver's hardship and offering condolences to his family. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro extended his sympathies, reiterating that political violence is "never okay" and calling for de-escalation of "hateful rhetoric."

In the same incident, firefighter Corey Comperatore, 50, died shielding his family, officials previously stated. Former Marine David Dutch was also injured, suffering a gunshot wound to the chest and liver, and was initially in a medically induced coma. Trump himself was grazed in the ear by a bullet during the attack.
