James Copenhaver, one of three attendees shot during an assassination attempt on then-candidate Donald Trump at a 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died. He was 76.

Copenhaver died Wednesday at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to a statement from the Allegheny County medical examiner cited in local media. His lawyer, Joseph Feldman, confirmed his death on behalf of the family, stating he died surrounded by loved ones.

During the July 2024 event, a 20-year-old gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop. While one bullet grazed Trump’s ear, Copenhaver was struck in the arm and abdomen. These wounds resulted in lingering injuries, requiring him to use a cane.

The attack tragically resulted in another fatality, Corey Comperatore, who shielded his family and was killed. A third attendee, David Dutch, survived the shooting.

Copenhaver’s injuries necessitated multiple surgeries, including a transection of his colon, and led to ongoing kidney damage and loss of feeling in his leg. His lawsuit against the federal government described his wounds as “debilitating, grievous, permanent and life altering.”

In June, Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne Copenhaver, filed a lawsuit against the federal government, alleging that the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security failed to provide adequate security at the rally. The lawsuit detailed the extensive medical procedures and long-term health consequences he endured.

The family’s statement highlighted Copenhaver’s devotion as a husband, father, and grandfather, emphasizing his instilled values of hard work, integrity, and service. It also noted his pride in serving in the armed forces, calling him a “true American patriot” who believed in the nation’s founding freedoms.

The White House had not immediately commented on Copenhaver’s death. The House Republican Conference posted a statement on social media acknowledging his "strength and perseverance" through "unimaginable hardship" and offering condolences to his family.
