A murder investigation has been launched after a blaze in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, claimed the lives of two people and left four others injured.

The fire broke out just before 05:30 BST on Saturday, engulfing a home and its occupants. Cleveland Police confirmed the fatalities and stated that one woman remains in hospital in a critical condition, while three others have sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities are keeping an open mind regarding the cause of the fire and are not ruling out potential links to wider organised crime. Supt Emily Harrison of Cleveland Police stated the force is working diligently to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and will maintain a visible presence in the Grangetown area to reassure the local community.

The incident follows a tragic road traffic collision approximately two miles away on the A66, which resulted in the deaths of five young men and two police officers on Saturday morning. The proximity of these events has understandably heightened community concern.

Neighbours described a harrowing scene, with one 20-year-old resident, who preferred not to give her surname, recounting the intense heat and residents' attempts to rescue those inside. She described helping a woman who had jumped from an upstairs window until paramedics arrived.

Cleveland Fire Brigade deployed six fire engines and an Incident Command Unit to tackle the blaze. While the fire was extinguished by midday, one engine remained on standby. Road closures were implemented, and the public was advised to avoid the area.

Local MP Anna Turley expressed her devastation at the loss of life and extended condolences to the families affected. Grangetown councillor Adam Brook urged residents to refrain from speculation, acknowledging the widespread concern but emphasizing the need for official information.

Families of those involved have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. The investigation is being conducted jointly by Cleveland Fire Brigade and Cleveland Police.
