NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced additional support for Ukraine on Monday, vowing to bolster the alliance's defenses along its eastern flank in response to recent Russian drone strikes that occurred near the border with Poland. Rutte emphasized that NATO allies would not be intimidated by Russian attacks intended to instill fear and deter support for Kyiv.

The NATO chief's remarks came as Poland heightened its border security. The strikes, which occurred on Sunday, involved Russian drones hitting a train near the Ukraine-Poland border and another strike near a different crossing point. Ukraine's state rail operator reported that the train strike happened mere minutes after a diplomatic delegation, including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, had passed through the station.

Rutte characterized the strikes as evidence of "Putin’s desperation" and a deliberate attempt to "sow fear and terror." He stated that Russia is exhibiting increasing recklessness in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. In a separate development, the Polish army recovered what is believed to be a Russian military drone from the Baltic Sea near Jaroslawiec, according to Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union's top diplomat, echoed Rutte's sentiment, suggesting the proximity attacks were designed to "scare Western countries from supporting Ukraine." She added that the EU should "show that we are there for Ukraine and we are not scared."

When questioned about the train strike, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russian forces operate "across the entire territory of Ukraine... and will continue to do so."

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk voiced concerns that Moscow might escalate its campaign targeting Ukraine's western regions. He warned that the "coming weeks and months will be a time of very intensified actions on the Russian side," and that an escalation affecting Polish territory could not be ruled out. Polish officials indicated that intelligence reports, including a CIA briefing, informed their assessment of potential Russian actions.

The incidents raise concerns about the potential for spillover of the conflict into NATO territory, despite assurances from alliance leaders. The increased military presence and heightened alert status along NATO's eastern border aim to deter further aggression and reassure member states.

NATO's commitment to Ukraine remains firm, with the alliance focused on providing sustained military and financial assistance. The recent Russian actions, however, underscore the ongoing risks and the need for vigilance as the conflict continues.
