The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Navi Pillay, a prominent South African jurist and judge at the UN’s International Court of Justice (ICJ). The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Pillay for her extensive career dedicated to advancing international law and human rights.

Pillay, who previously served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, is also known for chairing a UN commission that concluded Israel was guilty of genocide in Gaza. This work, along with her broader commitment to legal principles, was highlighted by the committee as a key factor in their decision.

The committee stated that Pillay "has shown that legal measures can help prevent acts of war and violence." They further commended her "commitment to universal legal principles and her firm moral compass," noting her early career defending Nelson Mandela during South Africa's apartheid era and her subsequent work on international criminal tribunals.

Her appointment to the ICJ and her leadership of the UN independent international commission of inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territory underscore her significant role in international justice. The commission’s findings last year asserted that Israel had committed genocidal acts in Gaza with the specific intent to destroy Palestinians.

In September of last year, Pillay stated that "It is clear that there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set forth in the genocide convention." Israel, however, rejected the commission's report, deeming it biased and "scandalous," and refused to cooperate with the inquiry.

The Nobel Committee emphasized Pillay's "independence, expertise and steadfastness," calling her "one of the most respected international jurists of our time." Her contributions, they added, have "strengthened the institutions of international law."

Pillay's extensive background includes her role as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and later as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Her career has been marked by a consistent dedication to accountability and the rule of law on a global scale.

The award to Pillay highlights the increasing recognition of international legal frameworks and human rights advocacy as crucial components of peace and security in the contemporary world.
