Los Angeles County prosecutors announced Tuesday they will not pursue the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who faces charges of fatally stabbing his parents, director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner. If convicted, Reiner's maximum sentence will be life without the possibility of parole, according to District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

The decision followed an examination of aggravating and mitigating factors, as well as consultations with the victims' family, prosecutors, and law enforcement. Hochman stated that the victims' other children, Jake and Romy Reiner, were consulted and their views were taken into consideration.

Nick Reiner, 33, pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder during his arraignment on February 23, 2026. He is accused of killing his parents in their home in December. Sources at the time indicated that the night before the killings, Reiner, who was living on his parents' property and had a history of addiction, had an argument with his father and was observed behaving unusually.

Reiner was indicted in August on charges including murder with special circumstances of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. He is also facing other charges related to the incident.
