Nine people have been killed in escalating long-range missile and drone attacks exchanged between Russia and Ukraine, with civilian casualties mounting in both nations. The latest strikes saw Ukrainian drones target warehouses across Russia, resulting in at least five deaths and 10 injuries in the Moscow region, according to regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov.

These attacks mark a significant escalation in long-range strikes, extending the conflict's impact far beyond the front lines and into urban and industrial areas. The targeting of infrastructure like warehouses and oil refineries suggests a strategic shift by Ukraine to disrupt Russian logistics and economic capabilities.

In Russia, a warehouse belonging to e-commerce giant Wildberries in the Tver region was also hit, and another of its facilities near St Petersburg reportedly caught fire. Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, has been accused by Kyiv of supplying dual-use items that support Moscow's war effort. The company recently banned smartphones for employees to prevent intelligence gathering that could aid Ukrainian air defenses.

Meanwhile, Russian forces launched strikes on Ukraine, killing at least three people, including two children, in the northern city of Sumy. An elderly woman also died in an overnight attack on the southern port city of Mykolaiv. Russian state media reported that Russian forces also struck seven cargo vessels in Mykolaiv's port.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently stated his intention to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict before winter, though he expressed skepticism about the immediate feasibility of this goal, accusing Putin of seeking to prolong the war.

These strikes follow a pattern of increased long-range attacks. On the previous day, seven people were killed and over 50 injured when a Ukrainian drone reportedly crashed into a beach in Russia's Krasnodar region. Ukraine has not officially commented on that incident but maintains it does not deliberately target civilian sites.

The civilian death toll continues to rise from these cross-border attacks. The nature of the targets, including warehouses and civilian areas, highlights the widening scope of the conflict and its devastating impact on non-combatants on both sides.
