Scottish police are investigating reports of several foreign athletes, identified in media reports as boxers from Uganda and Pakistan, who have not returned to their home countries following the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last Sunday.

Police Scotland confirmed they have received reports concerning athletes who are unaccounted for and are currently assessing the circumstances. "Enquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances, and early engagement is taking place with the Home Office," a police spokesperson stated late Tuesday.

Uganda's NBS Sport reported that four out of the country's six-member boxing team failed to return as scheduled on Tuesday. One of these athletes reportedly told the broadcaster that they intended to seek asylum in the UK. Separately, Pakistan's The News website indicated that one of their boxers also missed a scheduled flight home.

The disappearance of athletes after major sporting events is not unprecedented. Reports of missing participants have surfaced after previous Commonwealth Games hosted in Australia and Britain since 2014. This raises questions about the welfare and intentions of athletes participating in international competitions.

Following the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia, authorities were still seeking 50 athletes and officials a month after the event concluded. In that same competition, an additional 190 individuals applied for asylum. These past incidents highlight a recurring pattern of athletes choosing not to return home.

Approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 nations participated in the 11-day Glasgow Games. The ongoing investigations by Police Scotland and engagement with the Home Office suggest a concerted effort to understand the situation and the reasons behind these athletes' decisions.

The circumstances surrounding the missing athletes from Uganda and Pakistan are still unfolding. The police are working to gather information and determine the exact number of individuals involved and their current whereabouts.

Further details are expected as the investigations progress, which will shed more light on the potential motivations of the athletes and the broader implications for future international sporting events.
