Russia unleashed a significant wave of ballistic missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, resulting in at least eight fatalities and dozens of injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks, which occurred on Sunday, targeted multiple cities including the capital Kyiv, the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia in the south, and Sumy in the northeast.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the raid on Kyiv as one of the most massive ballistic attacks since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. These strikes come amidst a period of heightened cross-border activity, with both sides reporting successful attacks on military and infrastructure targets.

In Kharkiv, four men aged between 24 and 62 were killed when a postal terminal in the city's suburbs was attacked. An elderly woman died in Kyiv, and two more fatalities were reported in Zaporizhzhia, with one death in Sumy. Ukrainian air defenses in Kyiv reported shooting down 18 out of 41 missiles and 108 drones, though damage to both residential and non-residential buildings, including a supermarket and dormitory, was reported.

The missile and drone barrage highlights Russia's continued reliance on long-range strikes to target Ukrainian infrastructure and population centers. The extensive use of various missile types, including Iskander and hypersonic Zircon, alongside drones, indicates a concerted effort to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses.

In retaliation, Ukraine's navy announced it had struck five people on a Turkish-owned civilian cargo ship carrying grain in the Black Sea. President Zelensky also detailed Ukrainian operations, stating that security service units hit three oil depots in Russia's Stavropol region, while armed forces struck another fuel facility. Ukrainian forces also reportedly hit three Russian "shadow fleet" tankers in the Black Sea.

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium reported damage to two tankers at its terminal, which transports oil from Kazakhstan to Russia's Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, leading to a suspension of loading operations. The governor of Stavropol confirmed a drone attack caused a fire in an industrial park in the region.

These latest strikes followed Ukrainian drone attacks that reportedly destroyed two warehouses belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries, causing major fires and killing eight people. The intensity and scale of these attacks underscore the ongoing escalation of the conflict and its impact on civilian infrastructure and maritime activities.

Ukrainian officials continue to call for increased international support for air defense systems to counter the persistent missile and drone threats from Russia.
