Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has stated there is no evidence implicating Moroccan authorities in the massive border crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta at the end of July. The influx saw as many as 141 people die attempting to enter the territory.

This mass migration event triggered a political crisis and a humanitarian emergency, while also exacerbating existing tensions within the European Union concerning immigration policies. Speculation had arisen that Morocco might have orchestrated the crossing to express displeasure over Spain’s improved relations with Algeria.

However, Sánchez asserted that intelligence agencies provided no information suggesting Moroccan involvement. He emphasized the importance of cooperation with Morocco for resolving the crisis, warning that a lack of trust would worsen the already difficult situation in Ceuta. He stated that cooperation with Morocco is "frankly positive."

Instead of blaming Morocco, Sánchez accused Russia and Israel of disseminating disinformation. He claimed that fake news was being spread through social media accounts linked to these countries and the international far-right, who he suggested exploit migration issues to target Spain and Europe.

The Israeli foreign minister, Gideon Sa’ar, vehemently rejected Sánchez's accusations, calling them a "brazen lie." Sa’ar further stated that spreading defamatory falsehoods would not obscure Sánchez's "disgraceful failure to manage his country’s affairs."

The Kremlin also denied any connection to the Ceuta migration incident, refuting allegations of Russian involvement.

The mass arrival of approximately 70,000 men, women, and children into Ceuta created significant challenges for Spanish authorities. The situation highlighted the ongoing pressures of migration flows into Europe and the complex geopolitical dynamics influencing these movements.
