President Donald Trump on Friday pointed to "grossly incompetent" Minnesota leadership rather than Iran for recent cyberattacks targeting the state's water systems, despite U.S. officials investigating potential Iranian involvement. The President made the remarks during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David.

More than 30 water systems in Minnesota were targeted in the cyberattacks on Sunday and Monday, according to Minnesota IT Services (MNIT). The attackers aimed to remotely monitor and control equipment, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used for remote access.

Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, rejected Trump's assessment, stating the President "knows exactly who is responsible for this attack." Walz argued that the incident highlighted the nature of "modern warfare" and criticized federal budget cuts to cybersecurity agencies, which he claimed left the U.S. vulnerable.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) had previously issued an alert regarding threat actors targeting PLCs and modifying passwords to lock out operators from U.S. water systems. MNIT confirmed it is working with federal investigators but has not yet determined the responsible party. No active requests have been made for Minnesota residents to change their water usage.

Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota stated she spoke with U.S. National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross, who confirmed the attacks had no impact on services. Cairncross also acknowledged that resource limitations are a significant issue for many communities nationwide in addressing cybersecurity.

The FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency have reportedly issued warnings to water utilities across the country regarding potential cyber threats.

Trump's comments come as U.S. officials are actively investigating the possibility that Iran or hackers associated with the country are behind the cyber incidents affecting American infrastructure.
