Two men have been arrested in Manchester over a suspected terrorist plot targeting the city's Jewish community, authorities announced on Sunday. The arrests occurred just before Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, a period when many within the community observe religious services.

Both suspects, who are in their 30s, were detained on suspicion of offenses under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. The Metropolitan Police, leading the investigation, stated that the plot was believed to be in its "later stages of planning" and was "fairly imminent."

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans of Counter-Terrorism Policing (CTP) acknowledged the heightened concern such news would cause, particularly for the Jewish community during their High Holy Days. "We are acutely aware this news will cause further concern to the Jewish community, as well as the wider public," Evans said. She reassured the public that police are working closely with partners to ensure safety.

The arrests took place on Newton Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter at 14:45 BST. The two men were subsequently transported to a London police station for questioning and remain in custody. Authorities have secured warrants to detain them further, allowing police to hold them until September 27.

Searches have been completed at properties in Liverpool and Salford as part of the ongoing investigation. CTP continues its efforts to identify and disrupt individuals who pose a threat. Police have indicated that they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public related to this specific incident but urge continued vigilance.

A spokesperson for the Community Security Trust, an organization that provides security for UK Jewish communities, described the suspected plot as "utterly chilling." The trust noted the timing, so close to the anniversary of a previous synagogue attack, serves as a stark reminder of the persistent terrorist threats faced by Jewish communities.
