Two men have died after going into the sea at Seaton Carew beach in Hartlepool to assist children who were in difficulty. Cleveland Police were called to the scene at approximately 15:45 BST on July 12, 2026, following reports that two children were struggling in the water.

Emergency services, including the RNLI, responded to the incident. The two men entered the water in an attempt to help the children. Despite the efforts of rescuers, both men were pulled from the sea and pronounced dead a short time later.

The children involved were taken to hospital for checks and have been confirmed to be safe. The police have stated that the deaths are not being treated as suspicious and that a file is being prepared for the coroner. Specially trained officers are providing support to the families of the deceased men.

Superintendent Glen Wand of Cleveland Police expressed his condolences, stating, "Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of both the men involved in this tragic incident today." The force confirmed that the children were unharmed after their hospital assessment.

Local politicians have reacted with shock and sadness. Hartlepool MP Jonathan Brash described the event as a "heartbreaking tragedy" for the town. He added, "There are no words that can lessen the pain their families, friends and loved ones are now experiencing. My thoughts are with them all, and I know the whole town will be holding them close in our hearts at this tragic time."

Conservative MP for Stockton West, Matt Vickers, also shared his sympathies. "My thoughts are with the families of the men who lost their lives, and with everyone affected by this truly tragic incident," Vickers commented. The incident occurred on a busy beach, and witnesses reported a significant emergency service presence.

Seaton Carew beach is a popular coastal destination in Hartlepool, known for its long sandy stretch. While generally considered safe, like any coastal area, it can present risks, particularly when conditions change or individuals venture into deeper water. The RNLI, which operates lifeguard services at many UK beaches, emphasizes the importance of swimming between the flags and seeking assistance from lifeguards if needed.

Further investigations by the coroner will aim to establish the full circumstances surrounding the men's deaths. The community has been left mourning the loss of two individuals whose actions, though tragic in outcome, were aimed at saving young lives.
