Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that he would resign as leader of his Labour Party and as the United Kingdom's prime minister, marking the potential end of a turbulent premiership.

Starmer, who became prime minister after leading Labour to victory in the 2024 general election, stated from Downing Street that he had heard the views of his parliamentary party and accepted their judgment with "good grace." His resignation sets the stage for the selection of the UK's seventh prime minister in a decade.

The prime minister indicated that he would remain in office until a successor is chosen from within the Labour Party. He said he had spoken with King Charles about his decision and has asked party leaders to open nominations for a new leader on July 9. Starmer anticipates a new prime minister will be in place by September, when Parliament reconvenes after its summer recess.

Starmer's announcement follows months of internal party dissent and significant electoral setbacks. The Labour Party suffered substantial losses in May's local elections, losing over 1,000 council seats, which were widely seen as a public rejection of his leadership and performance. Despite these pressures, a formal challenge to his premiership had not yet been initiated.

Leading figures within the Labour Party have publicly expressed a desire for new leadership following the disappointing local election results. Some members have coalesced around Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, as a potential successor. Burnham recently secured a special election victory on Friday, becoming the Member of Parliament for Makerfield.

Following Starmer's resignation announcement, Andy Burnham confirmed on social media that he would seek a nomination in the upcoming Labour leadership contest. He stated that the public desires progress on key issues such as economic growth, the cost of living, public services, housing, and opportunities for younger generations.

Starmer had led the Labour Party since 2020, taking over after 14 years of Conservative Party rule. His tenure as prime minister began with the Labour Party's victory in 2024, but he has faced persistent criticism regarding his ability to deliver the rapid changes many in the party expected.

The upcoming leadership contest will determine the future direction of the Labour Party and the United Kingdom's government. The process will involve internal party nominations and likely a period of campaigning before a new leader is selected to guide the party and the nation.
