The United Nations General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to adopt a resolution promoting the Equal Earth projection, a world map that accurately represents the size of continents and countries. The resolution, led by Togo on behalf of the African Group, encourages schools, institutions, and technology companies to transition to projections that depict true proportions, addressing historical distortions.

For centuries, the Mercator projection has been the standard in classrooms and atlases, but it significantly distorts the size of landmasses, particularly those closer to the equator. A prime example is the vast difference between Africa and Greenland; on a Mercator map, Greenland appears roughly the size of Africa, when in reality, Africa is approximately 14 times larger. This distortion inflates areas like Europe and North America while shrinking regions such as Africa, Latin America, and South Asia.

The UNGA's vote of 164 in favor, with only one country against and six abstentions, signals a significant shift in how the world's geography will be represented. The resolution aims to correct the underrepresentation of Africa and other equatorial regions, which has been embedded in global perceptions for over 400 years since the Mercator projection's inception in the 16th century for maritime exploration.

While the resolution is nonbinding and does not ban the Mercator projection, it serves as a strong encouragement for wider adoption of the Equal Earth projection. This move is expected to influence educational materials, digital mapping services, and global awareness of geographical accuracy, potentially reshaping how continents and their relative sizes are perceived worldwide.

The United States was the sole country to vote against the resolution, with its representative calling it a "radical ideological project" and questioning the UN's focus on historical map projections. Serbia, Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, and Ukraine abstained from the vote. The US representative argued that the UN should be addressing more pressing issues than "map projects from the 16th century."

Togo's Foreign Minister Robert Dussey emphasized the profound impact maps have on education, imagination, and collective perception, stating that the resolution affirms African realities. The African Union had already adopted the Equal Earth projection in March, underscoring the continent's commitment to accurate representation.

Plans are underway for Togo to host a meeting in Lome early next year, involving organizations like UNESCO and the African Union, as well as major technology companies such as Google. The aim of this meeting is to discuss practical implementation strategies for integrating the Equal Earth projection into widely used platforms.

Every flat map projection inherently involves distortion because it attempts to represent a spherical Earth on a flat surface. The Equal Earth projection, developed by Martin Vang online and Bojan Savic, is designed to maintain true area proportions, unlike Mercator, which prioritizes direction and shape preservation, leading to significant area inaccuracies further from the equator.
