Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated his expectation that the war with Russia will continue through the winter months, a somber outlook shared following extensive talks with Donald Trump's top envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, in Kyiv.

The high-profile discussions, which concluded without an immediate announcement of a significant breakthrough, marked the first visit to Ukraine by Witkoff and Kushner since Russia's full-scale invasion. The previous day, the pair had engaged in separate discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Witkoff described the meetings in Kyiv as "substantive and important" and expressed encouragement, while Zelensky underscored his desire for a "just peace" that would preclude any future Russian aggression. Following several hours of closed-door meetings on Sunday, Zelensky informed reporters that officials from Ukraine, Europe, and America would convene in the near future to continue the dialogue. He also proposed a trilateral meeting involving Russia and the United States.

Witkoff indicated that significant progress had been made during the Moscow leg of their trip. "We're confident there'll be a good resolution here," he stated, referring to the discussions with Putin. Kushner elaborated that the US team had reviewed past unsuccessful proposals and focused on the essential elements for a "durable peace." He characterized the dialogue with Putin as productive, with exchanges of numerous questions from both sides.

Zelensky emphasized that should the conflict persist into winter, Ukraine would require substantial support in air defense and energy infrastructure. He noted Ukraine's reliance on American-made Patriot interceptors and highlighted that US stockpiles have been significantly depleted due to its war with Iran. Historically, Russia has targeted energy infrastructure during winter periods. Zelensky indicated that while Ukraine aims to develop its own anti-ballistic systems, they are counting on increased production from the Americans next year.

The US envoys traveled to Kyiv by train after arriving in Poland, as their plane was unable to land in Ukraine despite prior arrangements. During the envoys' visit, Presidents Putin and Zelensky reportedly agreed to a three-day cessation of strikes on each other's capitals. Zelensky welcomed Witkoff and Kushner at St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, a location near where a Russian drone had recently struck the Ukrainian security services' headquarters.

The diplomatic effort underscores the complex and ongoing nature of the conflict, with both sides presenting their positions and seeking pathways toward a resolution.
