Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has directly blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the ongoing conflict between the two nations, urging global leaders to maintain economic pressure on Moscow. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Zelenskyy characterized the war as "Putin's crazy war," asserting that only one man openly supports it.

Zelenskyy's remarks come as the conflict, which has lasted for nearly five years, continues to exact a heavy toll. He highlighted the significant Russian casualties, stating that Moscow had lost 248,000 soldiers in Ukraine over the past eight months. During this period, Russia managed to capture slightly more than 1,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory this year, a point Zelenskyy used to question Putin's strategic decisions.

"Putin spent 248 people for every kilometre. Does anyone still think he is smart?" Zelenskyy questioned, emphasizing that these figures represent human lives lost in "kill zones." He suggested that something consistently prevents Putin from seeking an end to the conflict, describing the Russian president as "patient zero" from whom the war continues to spread.

Looking ahead, Zelenskyy anticipates an intensified Russian bombing campaign in the coming months and stated that Ukrainians are preparing for a difficult winter. "Ukrainians understand that this winter could be very harsh for us, but in response we will have no choice but to make it harsh for Russia too," he declared.

Recent Ukrainian actions have included deep strikes into Russian territory, targeting gas condensate facilities over 3,000 kilometers from its border, and an attack on a Moscow oil refinery that forced a halt in crude processing. These actions come amidst continued Russian attacks, including recent drone strikes on Kyiv that resulted in casualties.

In contrast to Zelenskyy's call for sustained pressure, U.S. President Donald Trump has advocated for an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine, citing the conflict as a contributor to rising fuel prices. However, a recent sweeping sanctions package targeting Russia, signed into law by Trump with bipartisan support, underscores a different approach by the U.S. Congress.

Zelenskyy stressed that the money Russia earns through trade prolongs the war, reinforcing Ukraine's insistence on limiting trade with Russia and actively "burning Russia's revenues."

The Ukrainian president also noted that nationals from 47 countries are currently fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.
