Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Sunday that he had a conversation with former President Donald Trump, an exchange he characterized as significant and one that has led to an agreement to meet in New York.

In a social media post, Zelenskyy described the call as productive, noting that he and Trump discussed numerous points and that the meeting could potentially bring about substantial changes.

"There is diplomatic momentum," Zelenskyy wrote in his post. He also expressed gratitude for a recent visit to Kyiv by presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who is also Trump's son-in-law. Zelenskyy indicated that these representatives observed the situation in Ukraine firsthand and that "the peace track is our number one priority."

The Ukrainian president elaborated that during his discussion with Trump, they covered key details thoroughly and explored ideas for de-escalation. He mentioned that both sides are considering steps to address fundamental security issues, including energy and food security, as well as the protection of human life.

Zelenskyy conveyed that Ukraine is actively working with the American team and is prepared to take "really serious steps." He also thanked Trump for signing the Lindsey Graham bill into law. This legislation, passed by Congress, imposes sanctions on Russia and countries that support its actions in Ukraine.

While Zelenskyy's post did not specify a date for the New York meeting, he concluded by reiterating a shared sentiment for peace, thanking all those who support Ukraine.

Previous interactions between the two leaders include a meeting at the White House in August 2025, where Trump hosted Zelenskyy for discussions on a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, alongside European leaders.

This development comes as Ukraine continues its efforts to secure international support and advance peace initiatives amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
