Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated Tuesday that the Department of Justice is unlikely to investigate a Russian oligarch with ties to Vladimir Putin who allegedly financed significant portions of Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding festivities earlier this year. The news had previously raised national security and counterintelligence concerns.

"The president doesn't know who this person is. I think other members of the family don't know who this person is," Blanche told reporters during a White House press briefing in the Rose Garden. "When you say am I investigating -- Am I investigating what?"

According to records reviewed by the nonprofit investigative outlet ProPublica and three individuals familiar with the event, Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev footed a substantial bill for wedding celebrations that followed Donald Trump Jr.'s marriage to Bettina Anderson. The events took place in late May, including a private island rental and a fireworks display in the Bahamas.

Payments for these expenses reportedly originated from an entity associated with the International Boxing Association (IBA), where Kremlev serves as president. The IBA itself was suspended by the International Olympic Committee in 2019 due to financial and organizational issues, including concerns about corruption.

While ABC News has not independently confirmed the details of the ProPublica report, Donald Trump Jr. and his wife have acknowledged receiving a "generous wedding gift" from Kremlev. The reasons behind Kremlev's financial contribution remain unclear.

Blanche noted that Trump Jr. has described Kremlev as a "close friend" and stated he accepted the gift. Regarding the oligarch's alleged ties to Putin, Blanche commented, "When you say this person is a friend of Putin, I don't even know if that's true or not. I don't have any information. I don't know this person either, so I don't have any information about it."

Members of Donald Trump's family have denied any knowledge of Kremlev. First Lady Melania Trump, through her office, stated that she did not attend the wedding or subsequent celebrations and has "never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev." Her office also clarified that she played no role in organizing the event and was unaware of its financial planning.

Despite the Attorney General's stance, Democrats in Congress have expressed intentions to pursue their own investigations into the matter, signaling potential ongoing scrutiny.
