President Bush was visiting the second-grade class of Mrs. Sandra Daniels, listening to students read, when Chief of Staff Andrew Card approached him. Card whispered that a second plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, informing the president that America was under attack.

Krystal Davis, a former second-grader in the class, recalled the immediate change in the president's demeanor. "You could see the shift with [the president] once he got the message, and then you could see it on his face," Davis told ABC News.
