A Venezuelan mother has died after saving her daughter's life during a series of powerful earthquakes that struck the country, according to local media and footballer Héctor Bello.

The mother, identified by Venezuelan news outlets as Andrea, wife of footballer Héctor Bello, reportedly shielded their toddler daughter from harm as buildings collapsed during the tremors.

Bello shared his grief on Instagram, writing that his wife "gave your own life for our daughter, how you were a brave woman who never abandoned her, even as you took your last breaths." He confirmed his daughter and her aunt were hospitalized and in stable condition.

Rescuers are continuing to search through the rubble for survivors after the twin earthquakes near the capital, Caracas, killed at least 920 people and injured more than 3,000. The disaster struck on Wednesday.

Local football clubs also reported the deaths of players. Caracas Fútbol Club announced the death of its under-18 player Razan Sijaa, who was killed with family members at their home. Club Sport San Agustín mourned the loss of Victor Palacios, who was part of their academy.

Former Miss Venezuela Giselle Reyes stated that her mother died from a heart attack triggered by the shock of her building collapsing in La Guaira. The nurse caring for Reyes' mother was rescued alive.

Among the foreign nationals killed were four Spanish nationals, with 106 still unaccounted for, according to Spanish media. One Portuguese national and two Brazilian citizens were also confirmed dead by their respective governments.

The full extent of the damage and casualties is still being assessed as search and rescue operations continue in the affected regions.
