Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has become Formula One's youngest-ever world champion, securing the title at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday. The 20-year-old Italian clinched his maiden championship with a third-place finish at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, reaching an unassailable lead in the drivers' standings.

Antonelli's victory marks a significant moment in Formula One history, breaking the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he first won the championship in 2010. The win also makes Antonelli the first Italian Formula One champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

The race itself was filled with drama, including two safety car periods, multiple collisions, and a 33-minute red flag stoppage. Red Bull's Max Verstappen ultimately won the Grand Prix, his second victory of the season, but it was Antonelli's championship triumph that dominated the headlines. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton finished a close second, with Charles Leclerc in fourth.

Antonelli, visibly emotional, expressed his disbelief and joy over the team radio after crossing the finish line. His race engineer, Peter Bonnington, congratulated him on becoming "Champion of the world." Antonelli's parents and sister were present to celebrate with him immediately after the race.

"I'm speechless. I'm trying to process what has just happened," Antonelli told the crowd, wrapped in an Italian flag. He described the season as incredible and expressed excitement about future battles with competitors like Verstappen and Hamilton. Despite feeling tense leading up to the race, he was happy to have secured the championship.

Antonelli's historic win also means Max Verstappen moves up to second place in the overall drivers' standings, while Lewis Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc finished fourth in the race. McLaren's Lando Norris secured fifth place, and Antonelli's teammate George Russell finished sixth, ending his own championship contention.

Reflecting on the final laps, Antonelli shared in a later press conference that he was overcome with emotion, to the point where he "couldn't see the track" and was relieved to "bring it home."

The young Italian's achievement is expected to herald a new era in Formula One, with many anticipating further success for the talented driver. The season will continue with remaining races, but the championship title has now been decided.
