President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that his team held a three-hour meeting with an Iranian delegation at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The announcement came after Trump delivered a speech to the assembly where he presented Iran with a stark choice, stating the nation faces "potential greatness or obliteration."

During a press briefing, Trump described the meeting as "very good" and expressed his inability to understand why Iran would not pursue a deal. He later confirmed that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff or Jared Kushner were involved in the discussions, which he characterized as involving "mediators on Iran deal."

This diplomatic engagement occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions and previous military actions between the U.S. and Iran. Major joint U.S.-Israeli combat operations targeting Iranian military, government, and infrastructure sites were launched on February 28. Negotiations aimed at a war-ending deal, based on a memorandum of understanding, began in June but faltered as strikes continued, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz.

In August, President Trump had indicated a shift towards economic pressure, stating the U.S. would initiate a "crushing economic operation" to compel Tehran's submission. The current meeting suggests a renewed, albeit tense, avenue for dialogue alongside these other measures.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi was also engaged in diplomatic meetings at the UNGA. Iranian officials reported that Araghchi met with Italian Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, and Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

These parallel diplomatic activities highlight the complex and often contradictory nature of international relations surrounding Iran. While the U.S. president uses strong rhetoric and sanctions, his administration also engages in direct talks, seeking to de-escalate or achieve specific outcomes.
